Thermal detects heat radiating upward and outward from an animal's body. It works through light-to-moderate canopy and brush. Dense double-canopy at low temperatures can reduce effectiveness — which is another reason earlier is better after a shot.

Dusk to midnight when hogs are most active and ambient temperature is dropping — increases the contrast between the animal and background. Summer heat reduces effectiveness; fall through early spring is ideal in Georgia.

Tracking dogs follow a ground-level scent trail and work best in cool, dry conditions with a strong blood trail. The Matrice 4TD searches from altitude using thermal heat detection — it finds the animal based on body temperature, not scent. This makes the drone more effective when the blood trail ends (gut shot, marginal hit), in creek bottoms or thick terrain dogs struggle through, and at night when scent disperses. The two approaches complement each other well: if a dog loses the trail, a drone can systematically cover the surrounding area. Response time also matters — we can be airborne faster than most tracking services can mobilize.

Recovery rate depends heavily on how quickly you call and the hit location. Animals with good vitals hits that are called in within 1–2 hours in temperatures below 75°F have the highest recovery rates. Gut-shot or marginal hits with longer blood trails are harder but thermal still locates the heat signature of the carcass even after the animal has expired. The faster you call, the better — heat signatures fade significantly after 4–6 hours in warm weather.

Light overcast can actually improve thermal contrast by reducing ground heat from solar radiation — so some cloud cover is fine. Rain is the main concern: it reduces thermal contrast and can make the image harder to interpret. We monitor conditions before each flight and will advise on rescheduling if conditions aren't suitable. Weather reschedules are always at no charge.

No permits are required from you as the property owner or landowner granting access. We hold the FAA Part 107 certification that authorizes commercial drone operations. For hog detection specifically, Georgia HB 946 authorizes drone use for locating feral hogs on private land. We handle all airspace authorization requirements. We just need your permission to fly over the property and confirmation that it is private land.

The Matrice 4TD has two complementary night systems. The radiometric thermal sensor detects heat signatures through darkness, dense brush, and light fog — this is how we locate the animal. Once found, the built-in NIR (near-infrared) auxiliary light illuminates the area up to 100 meters without producing visible light, giving us clear RGB camera imagery for species confirmation. The animal doesn't see the NIR light. Most thermal drones don't have this — they can detect heat but can't visually confirm what they've found in darkness. We can do both.

For wildlife census flights, we just need legal access to fly. For feral hog detection under Georgia HB 946 (signed 2026), hunters and landowners are welcome on-site — we locate the hogs from the air and communicate positions in real time so ground teams can act immediately. For post-hunt wildlife recovery, the hunter should stay nearby so we can relay GPS coordinates the moment we find the animal.
